Native Americans Today:

Affects of the Modern Frontier?

John Balathunis - LC109 - Holyoke Community College.

When one thinks of Native Americans one tends to think of a people of the past dressed in feathers and buck skin, a people who faded away with the history they help create, leaving behind names like King Phillip, Crazy Horse, Sitting Bull, and Geronimo to name just a few. We remember them as casualties of war brought on by the drive of manifest destiny. Frederick Jackson Turner made a claim that the frontier ended and that the Indian question was answered. But the Indians are still with us as is our idea of manifest destiny. We still seek what is theirs and they still seek to defend it. Native Americans have adapted to the modern world and still struggle to deal with the persistent encroaching modern American culture that always seems to consume or absorb all other cultures in its path. This web-page will show some of what Native Americans struggle with today and you will see that not much has changed in the way they are treated.

Treaties

The Native Americans have been forced to live within the rules and terms of peace treaties forced on them by European Government's and then by the Government of the United States. These treaties have been broken over and over as U.S expansion continued to grow and Indian control of land was taken away from them. Today these same treaties are being used in court by Native people as a way of gaining land back.

Persistent Injustice and Mistreatment

The concept of "MANIFEST DESTINY" is a concept developed by white Europeans and Americans that has left a wake of destruction upon Native Americans. This persistent way of thinking still affects Native American tribes today.

"Incident at Oglala" talks about the Role the F.B.I had in the political turmoil of the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation during the early 1970s And shows the willingness that the Government had in enforcing its wishes even with the use of violence and the support of those that would use violence to achieve its goals.

As residents of Kahnawake look back, 10 years later, it is clear that time and healing circles have helped close the wounds.
